There were many religious objects and legendary places in Uzhgorod, that have been lost over the years. But, probably, no resident of Uzhgorod will miss the lost Museum of Atheism, which once was situated in the Protection Orthodox Church, the ProZahid believes.
The scientific secretary of the Transcarpathian Regional Ethnographic Museum Valeria Rusyn for many years was one of the employees of the Museum of Atheism. It was opened on September 1, 1979.
The exhibition consisted of more than 500 original exhibits. It should be mentioned that in those days, they significantly changed the interior of the Protection Church. Old paintings wered covered with white paint, under the dome, the famous artist Pavlo Balla painted a large mural "Flight into space", in the altar part, there was a large triptych that depicted the struggle of Transcarpathian people for freedom.
The Museum of Atheism worked long enough - until 1990. Then, they decided to close it, and employees and exhibits were transferred to the ethnographic museum. The building was returned to the Orthodox Church.
