Uzhgorod scientist: “What they have done with the Uzh channel is an armageddon!”

Uzhgorod scientist, a representative of UzhNU Oleg Kolesnik – the head of the Department of Botany, assistant professor, Ph.D. – condemned the so-called "clearing of the Uzh channel" which local authorities boast about.

This is what he wrote in his post:

"What is hapening with the Uzh rever channel within Uzhgorod city limits, near the office of the "governor" and with his blessing is nothing less than armageddon. It is a complete destruction of the river channel and damage to dykes of the embankments."

He explains scientifically:

"Instead of forming a channel based on hydrodynamics, they just level it. In large areas of the dykes, sodding has been completely destroyed, and they just covered them with sand and gravel without strengthening and sodding. And all this is being done in autumn, before the season of "big water"."

The prognosis is bleak.  "Do not be surprised when during the winter, the river will wash out all that and chances are that dykes of the embankments will also be washed out that will lead to catastrophic consequences," – Oleg Kolesnik says. 

We can only hope for two things: that the prognosis of the scientist will not come true and that next time the city government will consult with experts.
