There is no polio epidemic in Transcarpathia!

Not a single case of polio has been recorded in Transcarpathia

This was stated by the head of the State Epidemiological Service in Transcarpathian region Volodymyr Markovich on Wednesday, September 2, at a briefing in the press center of the Regional State Administration. He denied the information stated the day before by the Minister of Health Oleksandr Kvitashvili about the two cases of polio in the region.

"It was an acute flaccid paralysis found in two Roma children. This was confirmed by the laboratory Kyiv and the WHO laboratory in the US. The children had contact with circulating vaccine-associated poliovirus that led to this disease. There is no circulation of wild poliovirus pathogen that is causing polio," - the chief public health physician of the region said.

In turn, the head physician of the regional clinical infectious hospital Mykhailo Polyak denied the words of the Minister on a sufficient supply of polio vaccine. "The situation with vaccination in the region is critical, - he said. - Over the last three years, there has not been enough vaccines in the region. During 7 months of this year, the need for immunological products in the region has been covered by 14.9%.In particular, the region is provided with combination medicine, which is used for vaccination against polio, only at 16-30%. So, the year plan of inoculation in the region has been fulfilled only at 18%."

However, doctors expressed hope that thanks to the current situation with false information, the critical situation with vaccination would be resolved.
