Whom does road safety depends on?
From 9 to 15 of November, the National Road Safety Week 2015 takes place in Ukraine. The main slogan of the Nationwide information campaign is "Road safety depends on everyone."
The need to intensify educational work is obvious. Because news reports about incidents on Ukrainian roads are no less pessimistic than war chronicle from the East. The situation on the roads of Transcarpathia is also disappointing. This week, they promise, there will be many activities designed to draw public attention to the problem that our dangerous roads have become.
The segments where "interests" of drivers and railway workers overlap are especially dangerous. And the information on the number of violations in these segments shows that the developments are far from calming. The inspector on the traffic safety at the Lviv Railway of Uzhgorod inspection station Ivan Keshelya told uzhgorod.in about this situation.
So, during the 2015, crossing guards recorded 33 violations (in 2014 - 43), during raids with the traffic police, 33 offenders were caught (in 2014 - 43), 3 accidents happened this year on Transcarpathian railway crossings (last year - none), 9 people were injured on the tracks, 2 of them fatally (in 2014 - 6 people were injured, two lethal cases).
According to Ivan Keshelya most tragedies occur because of the irresponsibility of drivers and pedestrians. "Responsibility starts since the beginning of driving lessons. After all, sitting behind the wheel, the driver is responsible not only for his or her life but also for the lives of others!"- Ivan Keshelya says.
It is this responsibility that drivers, who blatantly disregard traffic rules, lack.
In addition to education, there must be liability and punishment for violations.
For information: Ukraine is among the five European countries with the worst rate of injuries and deaths on the roads. Every day, about 14 citizens are killed in road accidents, more than 100 people suffer injuries of varying severity. The main reasons for the commission of road traffic accidents are exceeding of the safe speed by drivers, violation of traffic rules by pedestrians, driving while intoxicated and violation of maneuvering rules.
