Uzhgorod "takes a backseat"
Uzhgorod shared with Zhytomyr the fifth place in the rating of Ukrainian-speaking cities. Thus, only 79% of Transcarpathians speak Ukrainian.
These are the results of the analytical survey "The position of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine in 2014-2015" - the "Elektorat" writes.
Lutsk and Rivne topped the rating (97%), and Ternopil took the second place (96%) being ahead of Uzhgorod by as much as 17%.
According to the survey, 79% of Transcarpathian residents at home speak only Ukrainian, 11% prefer Russian and Ukrainian, and 3% speak only in Russian. Meanwile, in Ternopil, 97% of residents speak in Ukrainian, 3% use two languages, and 0% of respondents speak only in Russian.
It should be noted that "Ukrainian language" in Transcarpathia is very peculiar, often the dialect in one district is different from the dialect of another one. And all these dialects are also considered the Ukrainian. So, for example, it is often difficult for a resident of another region to understand a Transcarpathian that is speaking "local" Ukrainian.
