Charm made by yourself! Transcarpathian masters are willing to share the secrets of traditional embroidery
Uzhgorod Skansen has good news for those who want to have an authentic Transcarpathian embroidered shirt and to learn the ancient techniques of embroidery using appropriate symbols.
Soon, the embroidery studio will open there to teach people the basics of embroidery art.
"The group will be open for people, regardless of age and gender, who want to make shirts similar to those worn by their grandparents, great-grandparents. During the year, craftswoman Tetyana Kohutych (graduate of Yuriy Melnychuk courses at the Ivan Honchar Museum) will be teaching all the techniques that were characteristic for Transcarpathia embroidery. Also, each session will be accompanied with demonstration of models of folk clothes from the fund collection of the museum and a lecture from candidate of historical sciences Vasyl Kotsan on features of traditional folk costumes of our region,"- the organizers say.
The end result of the lessons should be each participant's finished product (shirt) and the exhibition or show of self-made authentic shirts.
To start, craftsmen are gathering a group of about 10 participants. The enrollment will last until the end of the next week, and classes will begin already in mid-November (at intervals of about two weeks). They hope to finish in spring so that participants could wear their own shirts for Easter. "Believe me, it is much nicer to wear a shirt made with your own hands and embroidered not with magazine designs, but with ornaments that have been passed from generation to generation, carrying the good energy and great guarding power" - the experts say.
