Heroes among us: father and son from Uzhgorod are fighting for Ukraine in the East

April will mark exactly two years since Bogdan Bratasyuk was called up for military service. However, due to the notorious events in Donetsk and Luhansk region, he did not go home, but went from Kyiv to the epicenter of events.

Bogdan is now 21 and he never had fantasies that he would evade the army. While some people go there for a military ticket, he clearly understood that every real man should stand in defense of the motherland.

Now the guy is near Luhansk - in the city of Sieverodonetsk:

- Here we are assigned the task of keeping peace in the city, detention of persons connected with insurgents or insurgents themselves, prevention of illegal export and import of weapons and ammunition (checkpoints) as well as combat operations - Bogdan says. - Life here is unpredictable - you never know what will happen in 5-10 minutes. One minute you lie in bed, and in 3 minutes you are already fully equipped ready for action. And it is like that every minute of the day.

The soldier says that the current situation in Severodonetsk is calm, but there are still many pro-Russian people. Outside the city, from time to time battles occur and artillery works.

Bogdan's father - Serhiy Bratasyuk (by the way, quite famous Uzhgorod photographer) - has also been in the ATO since October 2014. He is an artillery scout, sergeant. But he did not serve with his son for long, the reason is the constant rotation of troops.

At home, in Uzhgorod, the wife and mother - Natalia - is waiting for her loved ones. The woman admits that she is looking forward to demobilization.

- I have ambiguous feelings about mothers who do not let their children serve, hide them from the mobilization, send them abroad. On the one hand, I understand them, on the other, I understand that my child is not the be-all and end-all of this world, to serve for all - Bogdan's mother says. - I fell like someone pulled him out and forgot to return. He is not a professional soldier, he did not chose this fate for himself.

The woman says that where her son serves rumors have it the men will have to stay in the ATO for another six months before being replaced with new soldiers.
