Talented young people successfully staged St. Andrew's Day customs
On December 15, students of folk art department of Uzhgorod College of Culture and Arts presented a colorful theatrical performance on the occasion of St. Andrew's Day.
The youth recreated the unique atmosphere of St. Andrew's Day evening gatherings using folk song and dance traditions typical for different regions of Ukraine. Young artists skillfully showed Transcarpathian unique features in kolomyiky and theatrical sketches flavored with a choicest authentic humor. And since this holiday in the folklore is associated with divination, they also demonstrated some St. Andrew's Day fortunetelling which over the centuries have transformed from folk beliefs into ordinary teenage games. Watching the performance on stage, the audience could see that our ancestors in the pre-digital era knew how to have fun as well as we do, and such gatherings gave boys and girls opportunity to show their talents and, often, feelings.
According to the director of the production - the teacher of the course "History of celebrations and ceremonies" Olena Nadvirna, the purpose of the event was not only to once again note the historical, cultural and artistic value of this holiday, but also to give students - future specialists in cultural and recreational industry - the opportunity to test their skills as organizers, writers, actors, presenters, music and set designers, etc. It should be noted that it is especially important for students, because soon they will have a pre-graduation practice in cultural institutions of the region.
