A commission to perform the provisions of the Law of Ukraine on discommunization has been established at Irshava City Council.
As you know, this law will lead to renaming of a number of streets, squares, settlements and so on. Ivan Popovich, a member of the Executive Committee noted that the law is not to be discussed, it is to be observed, therefor at least 17 of more than 80 city streets must be renamed. Because some of them are named after communist heralds of the past, Irshava City Council explained.
Today in the city there are, for example, Kirov, Engels, Frunze, Budyony, Kuibyshev streets. To ensure transparency in the process of renaming, the commission includes a historian and a linguist to help propose new names of streets before the next meeting. And, as agreed, they should be historically associated with Irshava and go through public hearings.
