From now on, October 14 is the Day of the Defender of Ukraine!
From now on, the Day of the Defender of Ukraine will be celebrated October 14 – on Holy Protection and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks.
The President Poroshenko ordered to make October 14 the Day of the Defender of Ukraine.
The decree number 806/2014 was published on the website of the President.
As stated in the decree, it was done "in order to honor the courage and heroism of the defenders of the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, military traditions and achievements of the Ukrainian people, to promote further strengthening of the patriotic spirit in society and to support initiatives of the public."
This repealed the decree of the President of Ukraine of February 23, 1999 №202 on celebration of the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland.
Since 1999, the Holy Protection Day, October 14, has been celebrated as the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks.
Furthermore, October 14 is celebrated as the day of the UIA, because it is believed that the Ukrainian Insurgent Army was created on the Holy Protection Day in 1942.
