On Sunday, November 9, in Mukachevo, for the third time time, a major event in honor of St. Martin - the patron saint of the city. depicted on its arms - took place.
According to the European tradition, this saint is honored with several attributes - wine, goose dishes and a march with lanterns. The latter was arranged with the participation of Mukachevo students - hundreds of children with handmade lampions marched from the church of St. Martin to Myr Square. This spectacle is fascinating and touching, and deserves to be seen by every one...
Also, according to the tradition, on this days in Europe, people thank the land for the harvest and open a barrel with new wine. At the celebration in Mukachevo, this was performed by the mayor Zoltán Lengyel - he sprinkled the town main square from a barrel of his own wine. Then, the celebration continued in the form of a theatrical performance - the audience were shown the legend of Martin - a legionnaire, who cut off half of his cloak to warm a beggar, who actually was Jesus in disguise.
They also mentioned that when people came to Martin to ask him to become a bishop, they were searching for him with lanterns, and he was given away by... geese, because modest Martin was hiding in the poultry house. Thus, traditionally, on the day of St. Martin, wine is accompanied by goose or duck dishes. So at the fair, in addition to wine, there were fried dishes. And the culmination of celebration was the fire - an incredible fire show took place on the square. It seems that this time the fire theater Dragonfly surpassed themselves...
But photos will tell more. We advise all Transcarpathians and guests of the region to visit St. Martin's Day in Mukachevo next year and to enjoy wine, fire and festive emotions.
