The criminals robbed more than a dozen apartments in Mukachevo. Law enforcement officers were searching for the young thieves, who did not leave behind a trace, for about a month, and for the last two days, they have been waiting for one of them in ambush.
The first theft occurred in the city back in the summer. The criminals were working in tandem and only in one neighbourhood of Mukachevo - Rosvyhovo. First, the guys would look for apartments on first floors of apartment blocks with open windows. Then, they would try to ring at the door. Having checked that nobody was at home, they would open the window with a metal crowbar and penetrate inside. They would steal from appartments only cash and gold and silver products, sometimes - TV sets. On average, the investigators say, 19-year-old thieves would steal 10,000 UAH worth of goods from a single appartment.
Detectives of the Criminal Investigation Department of Mukachevo District Police took notice of two young Mukachevo residents, one of which had already been prosecuted for theft. The two 19-year old boys, having no job and not studying anywhere, had suddenly begun living "in grand style." The detectives found out that they were regularly bringing gold products to a pawn shop. As it turned out, the jewelry was from the robbed appartments. In addition, one of the suspects, as he later admitted, was "hooked" on drugs. So he spent all the money for white powder and marijuana.
During the arrest of the suspect resident of Mukachevo, the police officers found in his pocket a disposable syringe with a substance similar to pervitin and chopped green substance similar to marijuana, weighing about 10 grams.
The incidents were registered in the Unified register of pre-trial investigations. The criminal proceeding was opened under Part 3 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (theft, coupled with the penetration into housing), punshable by deprivation of liberty for a term of 3 to 6 years, and under Part 1 of Art. 309 (illegal storage of drugs).
According to the Chief of Mukachevo City Police Vitaliy Shymonyak, the offenders are being checked for involvement in the commission of other crimes. Law enforcement officers are currently seizing stolen goods from pawn shops and from unscrupulous citizens who have bought stolen goods for a pittance.
