Transcarpathian police calls on citizens to surrender unregistered weapons

During the recent events in Ukraine, in some regions protesters captured different administrative buildings, including police offices.During those raids, citizens seized firearms that can lead to troubles, such as the recent murder of three traffic policemen with automatic weapons in Kyiv.

Recently, the number of serious crimes, especially robberies with weapons, has increased in Ukraine, and in Transcarpathia in particular. To prevent future offenses, the police calls on citizens to surrender unregistered weapons.

- These days, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine hold nationwide measures for voluntary surrender of firearms, ammunition, explosives and special equipment, including those wrongfully seized by citizens from law enforcement and intelligence agencies - the head of the licensing service of Tramscarpathian Police Mykhailo Sichka said. - Recall that the law provides for criminal liability for illegal possession and use of weapons. Specifically, Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives) provides for deprivation of liberty for a term of 2 to 5 years. However, a person who voluntarily surrenders unregistered weapons shall be exempt from liability.

Soon the police will initiate the month of voluntary surrender of weapons, during which citizens will also have the opportunity to officially register the illegal weapons subject to observing statutory procedures.
