The monitoring visit of the Representative of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Commissioner for Human Rights to Mukachevo
March 25, 2014. Oksana Filipishyna, the representative of the Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, and Olga Zhmurko, the director of the "Roma of Ukraine" program of the "Renaissance" International Fund visited Mukachevo with monitoring visit. Accompanied by the staff of the Charitable Foundation "Rozvytok", the distinguished guests visited the office of the "Mukachevo Human Rights Center", located in the Roma camp, where for a long time employees of this organization have provided free legal aid to Mukachevo Roma.
After that, the guests had a rich and meaningful meeting with the Deputy Mayor Mykhailo Labosh who informed about the problems that exist in areas densely populated by Roma national minority, focused on the issues that had been resolved since the previous visit, emphasizing the significant help of the charity foundation "Rozvytok" in solving the problems faced by both the city government, and the Roma community of the city, which, by the way, is one of the largest in Ukraine.
Special attention was paid to issues such as further development of self-organization of the Roma community in Mukachevo, the problem of water supply in the Roma camp, creation of a system for the provision of legal aid and active participation of Roma leaders in solving everyday problems in their communities.
Also at the meeting, they discussed issues related to the development and implementation of municipal target program to provide free legal aid, which will be developed under the project "Development of a sustainable system of primary legal aid to the residents of Mukachevo" supported by the Charitable Foundation "Rozvytok", the UNDP Program in Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the International Fund "Renaissance".
The meeting was constructive and productive. Representatives of the authorities took personal control of water issues in the Roma camp and promised to facilitate in solving social problems of the Roma population.
