The European Investment Bank allocates 55 million euros for the construction of the Beskid tunnel

The European Investment Bank announced the allocation of the loan to Ukraine in the amount of 55 million euros for the construction of Beskid railway tunnel in the Carpathian Mountains, which will connect Ukraine and the EU.

This was said in the statement distributed by the bank, whose headquarters is located in Luxembourg, the UNIAN informed.

As noted, the length of the double-track tunnel will be 1.8 kilometers.

"The European Investment Bank delivers a clear message, giving Ukraine a loan to finance the modernization of the key transport corridor. This assistance is important for the further strengthening of integral relations between Ukraine and the European Union", - the press service quoted the vice-president of the bank Laszlo Baranyach.

According to him, this is the first loan from the EIB for the Ukrainian railways.

The new tunnel is located in the Carpathians, it will replace the old single-track tunnel with a double-track one that will allow trains to move in both directions simultaneously. Beskid tunnel is one of the priority transport projects under the "Eastern Partnership".

The Bank plans to allocate Ukraine loans amounting to three billion euros in the period between 2014 and 2016 as part of the overall package of the EU assistance to Kyiv in the amount of 11 billion euros, which was announced in March.

As reported, the new tunnel will be built at the border of Lviv and Transcarpathia regions, 30 meters away from the existing tunnel built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the nineteenth century, which is in disrepair.

In late December 2013, the Cabinet of Minister approved the attraction of the loan from the European Investment Bank in the amount of 55 million euros for the construction of the Beskid tunnel.

In 2014, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine intends to lay approximately 0.7 km of track in the Beskid tunnel.
