"Arshin mal alan" is the last and most popular operetta by Uzeir Hajibekov. It was written in 1913 in St. Petersburg. The premiere of "Arshin mal alan" was held in 1918 at the theater of Zeynalabdin Tahiyev.
The events of the operetta take place in Shusha. Hajibeyov borrowed the plot of the musical comedy from the real life. Women in the East wore a veil, they were not allowed to appear in the street with an open face. Girls usually married according to the will of their parents. Similarly, the groom, in most cases, only saw his bride after the wedding. At the beginning of XX century, the family home lifestyle based on sharia law was subject to criticism. A new generation of young people wanted to create a family based on love.
The title of the musical comedy "Arshin Mal Alan" is a typical call of street fabric vendors.
