On the Danube Day, Transcarpathian children created a map of Ukraine and gathered 521 kg of plastic waste (PHOTOS)

The Danube Day is celebrated annually on June 29 in 14 countries of the river basin under the auspices of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube. 2014 marks 20 years since the signing of the Convention for the Protection of the Danube, which set the stage for enhanced cooperation between the countries on the protection and use of water resources and the 10th anniversary of the celebration of the Danube Day.

 

In Transcarpathia, the Danube Day celebration took place in several locations: in the village of Baranyntsi, where they awarded the winners and participants of the children’s competitions "Let’s fight plastic bottles!" and "Danube Art Master". In the village of  Kvasovo, students drew a map "Ukraine united by rivers", the idea and the size of which make it a contender for inclusion in the record books. In the same village, they also opened a pump for drinking water for the needs of the villagers and the village school and consecrated the alley of the of Heaven’s Hundred.

The participants of the press tour of Uzhgorod Press Club visited the villages of Baranyntsi in Uzhgorod district and Kvasovo in Beregovo district.

In Baranyntsi, they summed up the children’s competition "Let’s fight plastic bottles!". According to Olena Marushevska, the organizer of the competition, the event was attended by 5 teams. Together, the boys collected 521 kilograms! of plastic bottles in two weeks. 

     

 "It is important that children understand that plastic is not garbage, but raw materials that can be recycled. It is important to create such conditions that would allow materials to be taken for recycling – Andriy Bublyk (Coca-Cola Beverages Ukraine, which supports the Danube Day every year) says. – Over the past 6 years, we have noted that the amount of the collected plastic waste is decreasing. Our company, that uses plastic, can not stand aside of the problems of society, we conduct a lot of activities aimed at promoting effective management of plastic waste." On this day, Coca-Cola Beverages Ukraine gave the community of Baranyntsi eight 1100 liter containers for the collection of recyclable materials.

 

In Baranytsi, they also awarded the winners of the "Danube Art Master" competition (it is the all-Danube creative extravaganza, contest of crafts, the materials for which have been found right on the bank of the river, pond or canal). 

 

On the same day in Kvasovo, children created a map, the idea of which is the desire to show integrity and unity of the Ukrainian state, united by rivers. The map is quite large (3 to 5 m).  In Kvasovo, they also opened a drinking water pump, built by the villagers with technical assistance of the European Union project and presented the Heaven’s Hundred alley, where they planted 100 Sakura trees.
