Vartsaba Jr. believes that the arson at his enterprise could have been arranged by “competitors from Lviv or Ternopil” (+ photos from the site of the fire)

Yesterday there was a big fire in Uzhgorod, at the enterprise headed by the son of the police chief of the region. A printing machine worth almost one million hryvnias burned in the premises of the "Zakarpattya" publishing house (which is a joint stock company under state ownership). The director of the company Serhiy Vartsaba is the son of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Office in Transcarpathian region, General Vasyl Vartsaba.

Serhiy Vartsaba said that on Thursday around 10.00 pm, the guard had called him and reported about the fire. According to the current version of the events, they threw a Molotov cocktail at the window in the shop of the "Zakarpattya" publishing house, the only one in the region where full color newspapers are printed. The fire mostly damaged the printing machine, which has no analogues in the region. The director believes that everything was planned with the aim to cause maximum damage.

Vartsaba Jr. emphasizes that he has not received any threats. But he believes that competitors are possible perpetrators, hinting also at the political component.

It should be added that many Transcarpathian newspapers already have been long printed in neighboring regions because it is more profitable. Now, the director of the publishing house says, Transcarpathian colored newspapers will be printed only in other cities of the Western Ukraine, such as Lviv and Ternopil, because the company can not buy new machine to replace the one they bought a few years ago for 840,000 UAH – it’s just not cost-effective.

Meanwhile, the Office of Vartsaba Sr. does not comment on the incident, explaining that the examination is ongoing
