Two Uzhgorod snowboarders will be competing for medals at the Olympic Games in Sochi (PHOTOS)
In honor of the opening of the XXII Winter Olympics, on Wednesday, February 5, in the regional capital, according to the tradition, the symbolic Olympic flame was kindled. The ceremony was attended by the Olympic and world champion in handball Nina Getsko, officials of Uzhgorod and regional administrations.
This year, 43 athletes will be defending the honor of Ukraine at the Olympic Games in Sochi. Among them, there are two talented Transcarpathians - Uzhgorod snowboarders Annamari Chundak and Yosyp Penyak. Overall, Transcarpathia has been sending athletes to winter Olympic Games since 1998 - in such sports as skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding and freestyle acrobatic.
At the ceremony, some people were awarded for major sporting achievements and contribution to the development of sports. Thus, Nina Getsko was awarded the Ukraine NOC Medal for a significant contribution to the Olympic movement in Transcarpathia, honorary worker of physical culture and sport Anatoly Plekhanov was awarded the joint insignia of the regional administration and council "For development of the region".
The solemn ceremony of lighting the fire was performed by Transcarpathian athletes - Master of Sports, a member of the national team of Ukraine Igor Ham, Candidate Master of Sports, Olympic snowboarding team candidate Oleksandra Chundak, Candidate Master of Sports, a candidate for the Ukraine national Olympic freestyle team Anna Kukushkina. Using a special torch, they lit the fire in the bowl in the lobby of the SC "Yunist".
