On Monday, February 10, at the Regional Council, there was a meeting of the Council leaders with Representatives of the Slovak Parliament and the heads of NGOs from the neighboring country. The event was attended by the regional council chairman Ivan Baloha, the deputy chairman of the regional council Andriy Serbaylo, members of the regional council Miroslav Biletsky, Bogdan Kyniv, Mykhailo Popovich (representatives of the group "People's Council of Transcarpathia"), the Slovak parliament deputy, deputy head of the political party SDKU-DS Ivan Shtefanets, representatives of non-government organizations of Slovakia Martin Matko, Martin Veresh and others.
First of all, representatives of the Slovak delegation were interested in the situation in our country, "It is important to us, which way Ukraine will be developing, because you are the largest neighbor of ours. Slovakia once received European chance, and we want your country had the same prospect too. In Slovakia, there is currently little information about events in Ukraine, so we want to receive it. In our opinion, the EU should first give the signal to pro-democracy forces in Ukraine, to support the aspirations of the Ukrainian people to live in a democratic country", - the deputy of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Ivan Shtefanets said.
In turn, Ivan Baloha said that residents of the region expect active assistance from the European Union in resolving the crisis. "Definitely, Ukraine must become stronger as a single and independent country. Contemporary issues in the society are changes to the Constitution and return to the European vector of development. Now the authorities are not willing to make concessions, but it is wrong that the powers that be do not hear their citizens. Europe can give signals, including the introduction of a visa-free regime for Ukrainians," - the chairman of the council said.
The deputy of the regional council Miroslav Biletsky said that now in the country, there is a needs to change the Basic Law, because "the influence of the President under the current model of governance is enormous. People were driven to the streets by the refusal to sign the association agreement with the EU, but now they demand more - to reduce the dictatorial powers of one person, a fair system of the government, the courts and law enforcement agencies."
The Deputy Chairman of the Regional Council Andriy Serbaylo noted that the position of Europe in this situation is critical for Ukrainians. "The government brought people to despair. One man has usurped the entire chain of command. Dramatic changes are taking place in the society, and now people are seeking for the European model of development to be introduced in the country, so that the power system was changed", - Andriy Serbaylo says.
