The equipment for biometric passports is being tested in Uzhgorod

At the Main Office of the State Migration Service of Ukraine in Transcarpathian region the installation of the first so-called "workstation" for issuing passports with contactless electronic chips has been completed.

It is a scanner for fingerprints. And a digital signature scanner where a person has to sign. Also person is photographed to obtain a digitized image of the face. This information will be recorded on a chip.

According to the Chief of the Main Office of the SMS of Ukraine in the region Igor Mykhailyshyn, by the end of December they plan to perform tests of equipment for reading biometric personal data and training of personnel. Thus, on the first working day in January 2015, Transcarpathians will be able to receive new biometric travel passports.

In addition, in February next year, they expect to receive similar equipment for ten more territorial divisions of the Migration Service in the region to meet the demand for new documents.

However, so far, holders of biometric passports will have no advantages. In order to travel to the EU, they, just like holders of ordinary passports, will need to open a Schengen visa.
