This issue was discussed at the joint meeting of the boards of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine and Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, held in Uzhgorod, on October 11.

The Director of the Protected Areas Department Victor Kantsurak noted that, pursuant to the relevant orders of the President of Ukraine, they had ensured the development and approval of construction documents for the construction of the International Training and Research Center to study beech forests at the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. The estimated cost of the construction project is 22.5 million hryvnias. The construction is to be carried out for 2 years, starting in 2014, and funded by the state budget according to the Environmental Management Plan.

The Director of the Environment and Natural Resources Department of Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Yuri Shpontak in his report said that the project provides for the construction of the Center at the CBR in the village of Kvasy. The total area of the Center is about three thousand square meters with an interactive exhibition of beech forests and so on.

The International Training and Research Center is created to study beech and other forest ecosystems, including pristine forests of the European continent. One of the important activities of the Center will be the provision of practical training of students – future conservationists from all over Europe. The Center will be facilitating the spread of environmental and educational knowledge about forests and their scientific, environmental, cultural and historical value. Also, the International Training and Research Center will have a special theme dedicated to the implementation of the sustainable development concept in the context of today’s alternative energy and other environmentally friendly technologies.
