Belarus has canceled the celebration of March 8

Alexander Lukashenko has canceled all public events scheduled for March 8, International Women’s Day.

The events have been canceled due to mourning for the late president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, which began March 6 and runs through March 8, inclusive.

Lukashenko’s office also reported that he personally would go to Venezuela for Chavez’s funeral to be held also on March 8, and cancel all previously scheduled events on this day.

Lukashenko and Chavez had a good relationship, Venezuela president has visited Belarus several times and made a number of international oil and gas transactions.

Both leaders had a lot in common: their authoritarianism, populism anti-Americanism and the position of the party in the world community.

Chavez died from complications after the last operation for the treatment of cancer, which had lasted several years.
