Four hundred cyclists took part in the evening and night race in Uzhgorod, thus having opened this year's cycling season. The event could have been aborted: on the day before, the city authorities banned the race. And the city traffic police advised to give up the race in the dark time of the day, since, in their opinion, not every cyclist was equipped with required lighting devices. But, the authorities could not resist such strong desire of Uzhgorod residents. And, escorted by the police sirens, young and old people who are united by the love of cycling, rode more than 20 kilometers on the streets of the evening city.
Andriy Resenchuk is only 10 years old, and he has been riding bike for two-thirds of his life. To be prepared for the race during a dark period of the day, Andriy's bike was equipped with additional devices.
Cycling activists organized night race in Uzhgorod for the second time. Thus they popularized cycling as the best means of transportation for such a small town as Uzhgorod.
"Why at night? Because at night riding is much more interesting and much more comfortable - the organizer of the night ride Vita Munchak says. - There is less vehicles. Of course, there are problems with manholes and lighting, we can not fight that yet, but at night it is definitely easier to ride."
The head of the city traffic police Oleksiy Spivak was also noticed among the cyclists and he reminded: cycling is dangerous if you ignore basic rules.
So, cycling season in Uzhgorod has officially started. Despite the lack of infrastructure, cycling lanes and signs, the number of bike lovers in the regional center of Transcarpathia is growing. Today, at least one out of 12 residents of Uzhgorod ride a bike..
