Warning: Dangerous size
First watermelons, despite the fact that really tasty and safe melons appear only in August, are already available for sale.
Given the usefulness of this product and its flavor properties, watermelon experts advise to pay attention to the following:
- They must be kept on trade stalls, and not piled on the ground. Dirt and germs can penetrate through microcracks in the berries (and watermelon is a berry), so watermelons should not be sold alongside roads where the air is constantly polluted with heavy metals;
- Before eating, watermelons and melons must be washed;
- Do not buy too small or too large - more than 7.8 kg - watermelons. Agronomists believe that it is very difficult to grow such fruits without the use of growth promoters;
- Doctors advise not to feed watermelons to children under 2 years, and for older children - to buy watermelons in August and September - during the natural ripening season.
State Health Service of Transcarpathia advise to be cautious but assures that laboratory control of first watermelon samples for nitrates has shown that they are safe for consumption.
