Hungarian passports are issued mostly to Ukrainians – opinion

Hungary – Official Budapest published data, according to which, currently, 470,000 foreign Hungarians have filed requests for Hungarian passports. Deputy Prime Minister of the Hungarian government Zsolt Shemyen believes that by the end of this year, about half a million people will have received the documents, Radio Svoboda reported.

According to the published data of the Ministry of Justice of Hungary, in Ukraine 8783 people have received Hungarian passports under the simplified system. This is the third largest figure among foreign Hungarians. Hungarians of Serbia are on the second place (39,383 applications). And ethnic Hungarians of Romania are the most active – 125,275 people.

Officially, dual citizenship is not allowed in Ukraine. However, in practice, the government imposes on offenders only administrative liability and penalties within 173-500 UAH. According to experts who study this issue, there is a rather interesting trend: for large money Hungarian passports can be bought by people not of Hungarian origin.

The head of the public organization "Center for support Hungarian culture in Transcarpathia" Laszlo Zubanych,, who often travels to Hungary, said: "The majority of applicants are not Hungarians, because there is evidence in the form of certificates of registry office or documents from the archives in support of belonging to the Hungarian community or residence of their parents or grandparents in the prewar Transcarpathia. And then it turns out that most of them are Ukrainians."
