Recently, a horrifying statistics about the air quality was announced: according to the research of the Central Geophysical Observatory, Uzhgorod tops the list of over 50 most polluted cities in the Western region. It is preceded only by Lutsk – the Volyn region center. We could not ignore these rumors! We visited one of the permanent stations for monitoring the changes in the environment which we feel, but do not see!
The information obtained by experts is not just alarming, it causes goosebumps. For example, "the content of formaldehyde, which causes cancer of the airways, in Uzhgorod is almost three times higher than the maximum allowable daily average concentration. And this is for the reason," – Vasyl Lobko, the Head of the Transcarpathian Regional Organization of the Ukrainian Environmental League said.
"There is a lot of transport that move at low speed here, and also the roads are overloaded. In other countries, drivers are forced to buy a catalyst that is installed between the engine and the exhaust pipe. It significantly reduces the amount of substances emmited into the air, such as nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds, soot, dust."
Why isn’t it used here? The device, made in Japan, which should be replaced in 3 years, costs $ 600… Our drivers with minimum wages can not even dream about such accessories.
Also, short-sighted architects clearly were not concerned about people’s health when they built enterprises creating emissions in the air.
"This applies primarily to timber industry, that would have to be outside the city at all. In the region, there are 1339 enterprises creating emissions of pollutants into the air," – the ecologist says.
Add to that the harm caused by spring and fall burning of stubble and shrubs… multiply it by summer hot asphalt fumes and any comments will be unnecessary… Conclusions are in our lungs.
