The Mayor: Uzhgorod will work in normal mode
The mayor broke the "silence" and made a statement. The text is published on the official website of Uzhgorod City Council.
The Executive Committee and municipal services should run normally, so that the city is not caught in the collapse - the Mayor of Uzhgorod Victor Pogorelov said today, December 2, at the morning meeting with the heads of city departments, divisions and services.
"We all see what is happening in Kyiv and hope for protests to end peacefully and not to lead to tragic consequences. Everyone has an opinion on the events in the capital and everyone should primarily be responsible for themselves. Yesterday in Uzhgorod, there was a rally in support of European integration. According to police estimates, it was attended by about a thousand people from different regions. Of course, Uzhgorod is not apolitical, so it takes part in the events, but within the law. The Constitution allows it and protects people, who rally without breaking the law and rules of the community. The local government is elected by the community and we must act in its interests. Activists call for strike. What to do - every adult has to decide for themselves. Employees of private companies, businesses can decide what to do by themselves. Students, apparently, will skip classes. If any employee of the City Council wants to support the campaign in the capital, nobody will stop them, they can take a vacation and go, and heads of departments should provide a replacement.
However, the leadership of the City Council should ensure the normal functioning for all Uzhgorod residents.
Principals must ensure that schools are warm, and the children are provided with food. All teachers are responsible for their students during school hours.
Health care should also work properly, otherwise there may be problems, Transport service, social protection and social services also should wotk regularly.
I ask the municipal police not to intervene, to monitor compliance with environmental order, and the police also not to interfere, but to prevent any provocations and record them. I am sure that everyone in our city will act reasonably, carefully, and officials will perform their duties professionally and properly. We are working in normal mode and for Uzhgorod residents."
