School troubles in Uzhgorod

Late last week, there was a very unpleasant and much discussed situation around the educational complex "Yalynka", located in the "Shakhta" neighborhood. The Internet media published the information that Uzhgorod government has decided to transfer students, who were supposed to go to school for the first time on September 1, from comfortable classrooms of "Yalynka" to the school number 20, located far away from this neighborhood.

The concerned parents of prospective first-graders brought to our office a copy of the collective letter addressed to the mayor of Uzhgorod and the City Department of Education, where they briefly outlined the reasons for which they strongly disagree with this decision - the newspaper "Yevropa-tsentr" informed.

First of all, they say, such decisions should be taken in advance, for example, in the spring, and certainly not two or three weeks before the start of the school year. Indeed, under current law, parents have every right to choose a school for their children on their own. And most of them, having carefully gone over various options, chose the "Yalynka" as the one that meets all the criteria. Now they have not enough time to search for new school. And many parents for different reasons reject the school number 20, which they want to transfer first-graders to.

At the parents' meeting, devoted to this decision of local authorities, the deputy mayor of Uzhgorod V. Flenko addressed the audience. But his arguments did not persuade any of the parents. Yes, he said something about the classrooms' discrepancy with some standards. But last year, the "Yalynka" underwent a series of strict inspections and received an appropriate accreditation - and thus any discrepancy is out of the question.

The parents, who signed the letter, reserved the right, in case of ignoring their demands, to appeal to the prosecution and the court. This principled position of parents is supported by teachers, whose fate has also been called into question, because the personality of a teacher is also one of the criteria for selecting school.
We have asked the deputy of the city council from the "Shakhta" neighborhood Oleksandr Kovacs about his position: whether he intends to support his constituents on this issue? He said that despite the fact that he also considers the conditions in the school number 20 more suitable for schoolchildren, as a deputy he is obliged to protect the interests of the voters, and therefore his support will be entirely on the side of parents...

It remains to wish the first-graders' parents success in the fight for their rights. Especially considering that, apparently, neither Executive Committee, nor the City Council have yet adopted the formal decision on the matter, and hence there is no reason to fulfill this late and ungrounded order.
