How are asylum seekers doing in Transcarpathia?

August 21-22, representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Dmytro Blazhiyevsky and Armen Edharyan visited Transcarpathia. Together with members of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, the Deputy Head of the Department for Refugees and Aliens of the State Migration Service of Ukraine Petro Syniavsky, they analyzed the bottlenecks in dealing with asylum seekers and the needs of this category of people.

This was discussed at the meeting of the representatives of the UNHCR with the Chief of the Main Office of the State Migration Service in Transcarpathian region Igor Mykhailyshyn, the head of the department of foreigners and refugees of MO SMS Yuri Markov and the Director of the temporary accommodation center in the region Luka Fedurets.

The Chief of the Migration Service Igor Mykhailyshyn noted that recently they have taken certain measures to improve the situation with people in need of international protection, in particular in the integration aspect. This is the goal of the regional "Action plan for the integration of refugees and persons in need of complementary protection into Ukrainian society for 2020."  Representatives of the UNHCR informed about upcoming measures to update the Temporary accommodation center in Mukachevo and the construction of the greenhouse complex there. The EU will provide the financial support for the implementation of this plan.

As of today, in Transcarpathia, 44 persons have been granted refugee status, 52 have recognized as being in need of additional protection. Three asylum seekers were resettled to safe third countries under the UNHCR program. Since the beginning the year, the migration service of the region has received 158 applications for protection from foreigners.
