This year, 22 refugee children submitted applications for the protection to the migration service

In July this year, the joint order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Health, State Border Guard Service of Ukraine approved the Regulation on cooperation between the executive power bodies in working with children separated from their families who are not citizens of Ukraine and who submitted to the competent authority an application for recognition as a refugee or a person who needs additional protection.

Yesterday the participants of inter-agency meeting in Uzhgorod discussed how to implement the requirements of this document.

One of the topics, in particular, was the principles of cooperation when transferring children separated from their families, who announced their intention to be recognized as refugees or persons in need of additional protection, from border guards or police to the Migration Service and the guardianship authority.

Also the problematic issue of referring such children to children's institutions until the dicision on their status and subsequent stay in Ukraine was discussed

According to the representatives of the Border Guard Service, is a fairly common practice for illegal immigrants to report false information about their age in order to avoid liability and expulsion.  However, the appropriate medical examination can only be performed with the consent of the immigrant.

Following the meeting, it was decided to prepare proposals to improve Regulation on cooperation between the authorities in working with children separated from their families, who are not citizens of Ukraine and who submitted to the competent authority an application for recognition as a refugee or a person who needs complementary protection, and discuss them at the next expanded inter-agency meeting on refugees and asylum with the participation of UNHCR and representatives of executive authorities.
