In Mukachevo on the Day of St. Martin they will open the first barrel of wine and eat geese
November 11 in Mukachevo the first celebration of the Day of St. Martin - patron saint of the city on Latorytsia, will be held. It is this saint that was depicted on the seal of Mukachevo back in 1376, when Queen Elizabeth of Hungary and Poland gave it to the city. St. Martin was considered the patron Mukachevo until 1943. Currently, he is depicted on the emblem of the city, but few of its inhabitants know who this saint is and why he is the patron of Mukachevo.
In order to introduce Mukachevo citizens closer to the history of their town and start a new holiday that woukd attract tourists, the city of Mukachevo, along with the initiative group "UNgANG" from Uzhgorod developed the format of a new holiday that for many centuries, has been one of the most popular in Europe. There is a tradition to open the first wine barrel, and eat fried goose on that day, moreover, for Catholics this holiday is the last before Advent.
In Mukachevo on November 11, wine also will be opened. By tradition, the wine from the first barrel is poured directly on the ground - to thank her for harvest. Also on stage there will be theater performance about the life of St. Martin, and children will participate in the holiday procession with self-made lanterns. For their efforts the kids will receive sweets and be able to chase live geese in the city center.
