Chief Transcarpathian medic ventured on transplantology

"Our goal is transplantolgy" This statement today, September 12, in Uzhgorod Press Club was made by Roman Shnitser - Head of the Health Department of Transcarpathian Regional State Administration.

In Uzhgorod, vascular surgery is very well developed and in many respects Transcarpathians are the pioneers in this field. Roman Shnitser believes that this will contribute to development of transplantology in our region. All they need is a law that would simplify the transplantation of donor organs. "As far as I know, now they are making changes to the legislation on transplantation. It concerns a so-called "presumed consent". That is, if there is no document that prohibits doctor to transplant organ from a donor (for example, in the case of brain death), then the physician on his own or together with the family decides on organ transplantation. Now this is not possible. It may be done only if the potential donor himself issues the relevant documents and gives consent to transplant."

Mr. Shnitser believes that Transcarpathia has great potential to become the center of transplantology in Ukraine.
