Euro 2012 started in Warshaw

The first match of the European Football Championship in 2012 between Poland and Greece national teams started immediately after the ceremony opening.

Euro 2012 opening ceremony was held at the National Stadium in Warsaw. The show started in 20 minutes before the tournament matches between Poland and Greece teams start.

The solemn ceremony lasted for 12 minutes it combined together sport and the culture focusing on the local traditions and innovative technologies. The opening ceremony, according to the authors, marked the historical event beginning – the first European Football Championship which will be held on the Central and Eastern Europe territory. In addition, the show reflected the participating countries national coloring and generally accepted UEFA values: the unity, rivalry and passion.

The opening ceremony concept was designed by the creative director and the executive producer of the Italian company Flimmaster Events Marko Balich, who is involved in the organization and holding of such events. He participated in the concept of the Olympic Games 2006 opening and closing ceremonies in Turin. Besides, he already has the work experience in Ukraine. Balich was involved in the ‘Donbas’ stadium opening ceremony in Donetsk in 2009.

The well-known Hungarian pianist Adam Diord, who has recently celebrated the 30th anniversary in the New-York ‘Carnegie-hall’ performed Chopin etudes for piano (opus 10, number 11) at the ceremony. Diord is a big football fan and play in it almost every day.

Over 800 volunteers from 63 countries were involved in the choreographic opening ceremony performances.

In the list of VIP guests who were present at the ceremony were the UEFA president Michel Platini, the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanykovych, the Poland President Bronislav Komorovskyi and the Prime Minister of the country Donald Tusk, the former Poland President Lekh Valensa, the European Parliament former president Yezhy Buzek, the European Parliament Vice President Yatsek Protasevych, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Borys Kolesnykov, the Football Federation President of Ukraine Hryhorii Surkis.

150 million worldwide viewers watched the event on live broadcast, according to the preliminary estimates.

The stands were full. There were hundreds of Greek fans among the large number of Polish ones.

The European Football Championship finals will be held at the NSC ‘Olimpiiskyi’ in Kyiv on July 1. 16 matches from 31 will take place in Ukraine. The matches in Ukraine will be held in Kharkiv, Lviv and Donetsk.
