In Uzhgorod Press Club athletes of the basketball club "Uzhgorod-UzhNU" and the coach Oleksander Zubkovsky met with reporters. Uzhgorod basketball team has a chance for the first time to break to the Major League of Ukraine.
The athletes told about this year’s achievements and sport life in 2012, and the prospects for 2013.
The coach said that they have chances to break to the Major League, but with the current players and budget it would be difficult to do.
According to Konstantin Kostenko, 2012 was the most successful for Transcarpathian basketball. The club took the 5th place in the first half of the year.
Oleksandr Zubkovsky said that the task for this season was primarily to train young players. Uzhgorod team is the only one in the western Ukraine, which has so many local players. Most teams mostly have mercenaries. In addition, not only students play for "Uzhgorod-UzhNU" but also three schoolboys. UzhNU helps the team with organization, the Office of Youth and Sports of the Transcarpathian Regional Administration and one basketball veteran support the team in away games. "The deputy Serhiy Moshak saved our team when in the middle of the season one of the sponsors left us – said Oleksandr Zubkovsky. – Serhiy Moshak gave the players basketball uniform and facilitated home games. Thanks also to the rector of UzhNU Fedir Vashchuk and the vice rector Fedir Shandor, who took us under their wing."
The team, which has been playing in the championship of Ukraine since 2009, dreams about constant sponsors, because they have big plans. The club has established the system of training the athletes from the smallest children to the first team.
In Transcarpathia there are not many basketball groups. They operate only in a few cities: Uzhgorod, Mukachevo, Svalyava, Irshava. So far there is no opportunity to restore women’s basketball team because of the lack of coaches.
