The majority of Ukrainians want to the EU, number of supporters of union with Russia is decreasing
Ukraine's accession to the European Union is supported by 52% of Ukrainians, opposed - by 34%, 14% - are undecided. These are results of a study conducted by the sociological group "Rating" in the autumn of this year.
Mostly this initiative is supported by young people (nearly two-thirds of respondents aged 18-29 years), the most pessimistic thereto are elderly people (38% support it and 43% do not).
Among Westerners, 77% support European integration, somewhat less - in the central part (64%), in the North (54%) and East (51%). In the South and Donbass about half of respondents do not support the initiative.
At the same time the idea of creation of a single state consisting of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus is supported by 41% of Ukrainians, opposed - by 44%, 15% are undecided.
As noted by sociologists, if in 2010-2011 the number of supporters of the union with Russia consistently outnumbered the opponents, in 2012, the reversed tendency is observed.
Mostly the creation of a commonwealth is supported by older people (53%) and the least - by young people (32%).
Consistently high support for the initiative is among residents of the South (64%), Donbass (57%) and East (54%) of the country. At the same time, more than half of the residents of Central and Northern Ukraine and more than 80% of the residents of Western Ukraine oppose it.
Interestingly, at least a quarter of respondents who support the creation of a single state with Russia and Belarus, also support Ukraine's accession to the EU.
The study was conducted from September 25 to October 5, 2012 among 2,000 respondents from all regions of Ukraine. Research method: personal formalized interview according to the questionnaire (face to face). The statistical error does not exceed 2.2%.
