There are nearly 3 thousand Ukrainians in foreign prisons

Currently there are nearly 3 thousand citizens of Ukraine in foreign penitentiary institutions. This was announced by the Information Policy Department of MFA of Ukraine director Oleg Voloshyn at the request of the newspaper Tyzhdien.

The largest amount of Ukrainian convicts serve their sentences in such countries as Russia, Czech Republic, Belarus, Germany, Portugal, where temporarily live a large number of our dwellers, - was said in the statement. The Foreign Ministry pointed out that two of our dwellers were sentenced to death during two years of Ukraine’s independence.

For example, Ukrainian Viktoriia Mamontova was sentenced to death for drugs possession in Thailand. ‘The mentioned decision was not implemented. Thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs work this sentence was replaced by life imprisonment and later to 33 years of imprisonment. V. Mamontova was pardoned by the King of Thailand and returned to her Motherland in 2009’, - pointed out Voloshyn.

In addition, the citizen of Ukraine was sentenced to capital punishment for the local United Arab Emirates dweller during an armed assault n 2002. ‘The sentenced was not executed as a result of undertaken measures of MFA and the Embassy of Ukraine in UAE. Currently, the mentioned person is in the local penal institution’, - informed Voloshyn.

MFA reminds that citizens of Ukraine must obey the laws of the country they visit, since any person is liable under the law of the host country for the made crime.

We want to remind you that the Transcarpathian dweller Edward Chykosh was sentence to the life imprisonment in Egypt this year in spring on changes of weapons’ smuggling. At the same time, 19 Ukrainian were sentenced to 10 years of correctional labor for aiding Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in Libya.
