Romanian politicians may promote themselves only in debates

The electoral campaign to the Romania local government which lasts for 30 days and ends on Saturday, June 9, at 7 a.m. started on May 11.

The law stipulates that the election campaign candidates, political parties, political alliances and citizens have the right to freely express their opinions and without any kind of discrimination by holding meetings with the use of television, radio and other mass media outlets.

The candidates are provided with places to hold meetings with the voters in the municipality, schools, universities recreation centers, cultural centers and theaters during the election campaign. It is prohibited to organize the campaign in the military units, at school and universities in the period of study.

The cash, goods and other services providing promises to voters during the election campaign and receiving them by voters is a criminal offense and it is punishable by imprisonment for the period from 6 months to 5 years.  

The state and private radio and television services are obliged to provide the fair and balanced election campaign conducting according to the law. The access to the public television and radio is free.

The Law 67/2004 regarding to the local governments elections implies that during the election campaign, candidates and representatives of competing political parties have access to the state and private radio and television only during the political debates. The candidates, who perform the public functions may participate in TV programs only in the discussion of their tasks.
