“Euro” with extinguished lights

Theoretically, we are ready for Euro 2012. In our imagination football is in full swing, the stadiums are overcrowded, millions of football fans are in the country, beer is flowing, souvenirs are being bought, money is being raised … Ukrainian ladies powdered their noses, put on their brand-new dresses and are waiting for foreign princes, fans who will take them away to distant lands, to luxury villas with a large dog and ten bathrooms and bedrooms.
 
… Here a European tourist is entering Transcarpathia. He quietly drives at night from Chop, past Holmok, Menay, Rozovka … He decides to spend night in the regional centre, to look around a glorious European city Uzhgorod by day. In some places the road is illuminated, but in other places the lights are completely "asleep", and there are dark spots of the highway. Poor thing he will be able to discern neither Transcarpathian beauty, nor signs, pedestrians or stops – complete darkness. If he is lucky enough he will find a hotel, if not – one of many open “lidless” manholes. Well, numerous pits on the streets of Uzhgorod will find him themselves – otherwise he won’t get anywhere. Hooray to Uzhgorod authorities and public utilities! Ready for Euro, tourists will remember this for a long time!
