Names of the Jews, who died in concentration camps, will be embossed on the monument to the victims of the Holocaust, near the premises of the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic (the former synagogue) in Uzhgorod. Additional items were planned to be installed earlier. The idea to commemorate the Transcarpathian people was suggested by Petro Mermelstein, the head of the regional cultural association of Jews of Transcarpathia, the Uzhgorod Press Club informed. The names of two families have already been put on the monument. "60 thousand Transcarpathian Jews were killed during the Second World War. The names of those hundreds of thousands, who were killed, need to be remembered. I very much hope that after these two names many more will appear on the monument. And not only Jews, but also other nationalities, which were persecuted by different regimes in Transcarpathia, – Petro Mermelstein said. – Our task is to prevent this from happening again. This monument will soon bear the names that we need to preserve". The opening was attended by representatives of various national communities of Transcarpathia: Jewish, Slovak, Hungarian and others. The main rabbi of Uzhgorod and Transcarpathia, Wilhelm Menachem Mendel, prayed for all the dead. Recall: The monument to the victims of the Holocaust in Uzhgorod is a "David’s star" with a metal "Star of Infinity" towering above it. The monument will bear plaques bearing the names of people, who died in concentration camps.
