More than relevant: education of Roma children was discussed in Uzhgorod

School education of Roma children today was the main focus of the meeting of the Coordinating council of Uzhgorod City Council on protection and integration of Roma national minorities into the Ukrainian society.

Oleksandr Bilak, the chairman of the Coordinating council, the deputy mayor of Uzhgorod, emphasized that equal access to education is one of the factors of the integration of the Roma community into society, which, among other things, will allow to avoid potential conflicts in the future.

With the participation of the deputy head of the city’s education department, Natalia Mukhamedianova, the directors and heads of several schools and parents, they considered the issue of admitting several Roma children to the 1st grade. Natalia Mukhamedianova said that there was information about children aged 7-9 who have not attended school at all. If Romani leaders help to convince parents of such children to submit applications and relevant documents to the school number 13, then one more 1st form will be opened at this school.

Miroslav Horvat, the deputy head of the Department of Labor and Social Welfare of Uzhgorod City Council said that it is necessary to start preparations for the school year 2019-2020 already this year, because there would be even more Roma first-graders.

At the meeting of the Coordinating Council, they decided to invite the parents of Romani first-graders to the City Council in late August and to hold a meeting with them on the education of the children.

By the way, Uzhgorod.in published the information about the Roma school in Uzhgorod, which has an interesting and long history.
