Last year year it was draught, now it is flood. Sowing season in Transcarpathia is delayed

Spring field works in Transcarpathia have been postponed. According to optimistic forecasts, until mid-April, to the pessimistic – until May. The wet spring has shaped the sowing campaign, which ideally should begin in March.

Farmlands of Irshava district suffered from the water the most. 110 hectares of winter wheat, 40 hectares of winter crops are flooded there. Also, in the villages of Zarichchya, Siltse, Kamyanske, Ilnytsya, 30 acres of greenhouses with vegetables are under water.

This was reported to uzhgorod.in in the department of crop production, marketing and agro-services of the Chief Agricultural Development Office of Transcarpathian Regional State Administration. The head of the department Oleksandr Yuryk named another cause of flooding – a malfunction of reclamation system. Due to flooding, the yield on these plots of land will decrease.   In general, the average grain yield in Transcarpathia is 30-35 quintals per hectare of sown area.

According to preliminary plans, from 31,700 hectares, sown with winter crops, they are going to gather 112,000 tonnes of harvest.

Transcarpathia in terms of agriculture is risky, experts note. If this year’s crop and harvest was affected by flood, the last year it was affected by draught.
