In Uzhgorod, the police caught a group of car thieves

This criminal group committed  a series of thefts from cars in the regional center of Transcarpathia.

In February, Uzhgorod city police began to receive from local residents reports of thefts from their cars. Unknown thieves were stealing everything they could – radios, wallets with money, documents, spare wheels, sets of keys, jacks and other small things.

Having analyzed those thefts, the police suggested that they all had the same M.O., and thus were committed by one person.

Soon, perseverance and professionalism helped law enforcement officers to solve those thefts from Uzhgorod residents’ cars.

According to the Acting Chief of Uzhgorod City Police Volodymyr Kuvyk, the gang consisted of three Uzhgorod residents aged 18, 21 and 22 years, who had been brought together by the oldest of them. He had already had problems with the law – he spent several years in prison for the same crime.

According to the offenders, they would commit thefts in evening and night time. They would burgle only Soviet-made cars, that would be left by victims in the yards and on the streets. Typically, such cars were not equipped with alarm system. And their locks could be easily picked or broken with screwdrivers, knives, scissors.

The criminal proceedings against the thieves were opened under Part 2 of Art.185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (theft committed repeatedly or by prior conspiracy by a group of persons) that is punishable by arrest for a term of three to six months, restriction of liberty for a term not exceeding five years, or imprisonment for the same term.

It was established that these criminals were involved in ten thefts from city residents’ cars. Uzhgorod police officers are carrying out further measures to establish other episodes of criminal activity. The investigation is ongoing.
