In Transcarpathia, a former official will be imprisoned for 5 years for a 280,000 UAH bribe

The sentence of the Uzhgorod city and district court in Transcarpathian region against the former head of the State Land Agency department in Uzhgorod district, who was demanding from a local businessman 280,000 UAH, has entered into force.

Abusing his office, the official demanded 280,000 UAH of undue advantage in exchange for granting the entrepreneur a short-term lease of 10 hectares of land in Patskanyovo village council in Uzhgorod district for the purposes of his business.

In June 2013, officers of the Security Service of Ukraine detained the head of the department after he had received the first part of the money – 132,000 UAH.

The detainee was notified of suspicion of committing a crime under Part 4 of Art.368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The Court qualified the actions of the former official as "receiving undue advantage in a large amount by an official who holds a responsible position", found the accused guilty and sentenced him to a five years’ imprisonment with a probation period of 3 years. Also, the court deprived the former officer of the right to hold posts related to the implementation of organizational-administrative and administrative-economic functions in state and local government bodies for three years and stripped him of his civil servant’s rank 11 of category 6.
