In the center of the Hungarian city of Miskolc, there is a monument to a dog, who is searching for something. This is what what the most famous search-and-rescue dog named Manch Satan was doing all his life.
And this is the story about him. Manch was a German Shepherd, the same as all the other puppies: playful, curious, affectionate.
He was sent to the school for search and rescue dogs, where he was an excellent student.
Manch, along with the Miskolc rescue team "Speeder", traveled around the world to the places, where disasters, earthquakes, mudflows, landslides occurred. that is where people needed help. Manch and his owner Laszlo Lehóczki participated in several rescue missions, including in 2001 after earthquakes in El Salvador and India.
In 1999, there was a great earthquake in the city of Izmit in Turkey. Buildings collapsed like houses of cards, burying everything and everyone underneath. People, who managed to escape, were desperately looking for their loved ones trapped under the rubble. Help was coming from all over the world. On the fourth day, no one expected to find a living being under the rubble, but Manch gave a sign that he had found someone alive under the ruins. Thus, a three-year girl was rescued. And a dog named Manch became famous throughout the world.
In December 2006, Manch died of pneumonia. And before that, in 2004, in the center of Miskolc, the statue of Manch made by sculptor Borbála Szanyi was installed near the creek on the new town square.
When the monument to the dog was installed in Miskolc on the banks of the creek, the city children brought flowers and candles, and when it was very cold, they would even wrap the bronze dog in blankets. It is believed that, when visiting Miskolc, you should immediately go to Manch and rub his nose. Then nothing bad will happen to you.
