In Barvinok, gravestones have been stolen from the cemetery (PHOTOS)

Vandals steal tombstones at the cemetery in Barvinok.

Currently, at least 7 thefts of granite tombstones have been recorded, the press service of Uzhgorod city council informs.

According to Anatoliy Sukholov, the head of the Association of Utilities (serving Uzhgorod cemeteries), the first case was recorded in early September.

Immediately, they called the police and relatives of the deceased.

The next case happened recently – the grave, where a young man is buried, was robbed. The parents set a triple tombstone (for themselves too), and there were two empty granite plates, in addition to the son’s gravestone. Those were stolen, which was a severe shock to the grieving family. Not to mention pecuniary damage.

Anatoliy Sukholov said they thought those were isolated cases, but later they found out the lack of several more monuments. Since the cemetery is huge (15 hectares) and open, they did not notice it immediately.

In addition to tombstones, they also steal granite vases or valuable lamps – that is anything that is expensive. What is alarming is that all the plates were removed very carefully: not broken, but dismantled without damage, so it is possible that people, who are familiar with the process, are involved in it.

The administration of the Association of Utilities appeals to people: if anyone has seen suspicious people or has any information about these facts, please notify the company (Heroyi st., 2) by phone 44-12-16, 3-21-30, or the police – 102.

Currently, the administration of the utility companies is developing a document, which is planned to be submitted to the executive committee of Uzhgorod city council to get permission to install two gates (there are two entrances) and determine the visiting hours of the cemetery in order to prevent thefts.
