Celebrations took place today on Narodna Square in Uzhgorod, where the blue and yellow flag was raised to the sound of the National Anthem of Ukraine.
The official ceremony of the State Flag raising was attended by the First Deputy Head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Oleh Kotsyuba, the Deputy Chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Council Petro Hrytsyk, Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv, heads of law enforcement and security agencies, servicemen and the public.
Every year on August 23, the day before the Independence Day, Ukraine celebrates the National Flag Day. The date was chosen to commemorate the events of 1991, when a group of people’s deputies brought a blue and yellow flag to the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The holiday itself was founded by the decree of the second President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma "On the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine" of August 23, 2004.
