Go to the Valley of Daffodils now

The Valley of Daffodils, that in May gets covered with white carpet of wild daffodils, has another very attractive natural flavor – in March, the Spring Snowflake (Leucojum vernum L.) blossoms there, the Zelene.net informs.

However, while lush blossoming of daffodils in May is compared to a carpet of flowers, tiny flowers of the spring snowflake are rather reminiscent of delicate embroidery. Now, the flowering of spring snowflakes in the Valley of Daffodils is just starting, the peak of blooming is expected in a few days. Conservationists remind: do not forget that the spring snowflake, as well as most early spring species, is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

The Spring Snowflake is a perennial bulbous plant. Its bell-like white flowers on lush peduncles cover grasslands starting from the advent of snowy glade. The Spring Snowflake occupies a special position among all early spring species. The scientific genus name is derived from the Greek word which means "white violet." The first part of the name is associated with white color of flowers, and the second one – with their violet aroma. The scientific species epithet "vernum" is derived from the Latin word "spring." Also the spring snowflake is called forest daffodil.
