First open doors day at the animal shelter in Uzhhorod (PHOTOREPORT)

It happened! An animal shelter has begun its work in Uzhhorod.

An establishment is opened in the rayon of the city water treatment facilities (behind the Zahorska street), where tailed wanderers will be kept.

The shelter is maintained by the volunteers of the "Barbos" civic organization. They welcomed visitors and introduced them their pets. Mostly children enjoyed the visit, but adults had positive emotions as well.

Currently, 35 dogs and puppies are kept in the shelter. Here, they are looked after, fed and cured,  treated against parasites and vaccinated. The animal shelter is divided into two areas: an ordinary and a quarantine one. Pets’ sterilisation is on the upcoming schedule as well.

In addition, the shelter’s aim is to find masters for the pets.

We remind that the whole "story" about establishing an animal shelter took several years. There were long-term promises and even conflicts between the City Council and the activists.

Under the pressure from the community, the City Council allocated some land for the shelter but took no further steps. The construction of the animal shelter was slowed gradually. Finally, the work began several months later. Little inconveniences are not taken into consideration now. They hope for the support of the caring civilians and the local authorities. By the way, Bohdan Andriyiv, city Mayor, visited the official opening too (on his way to the shelter, he helped to pull out other’s cars out of the mud).

At the celebration, one could not only study the shelter. Master classes were held on ecology and stories were told about dogs. Everyone had the possibility to play with the animals as much as they wanted to.
