Soviet art on the streets Uzhgorod: graffitos, tapestries and mosaics still live in the regional center
Soviet art is the name of the art, recognized in the USSR in the period from 1917 to 1991
It includes both agitational, ideologically aggressive and official art, and informal forms. It still "lives" in Transcarpathia. Although time has passed, and for a variety of reasons many works can be seen only on old photographs, some examples still remind us of that era's cultural spirit.
In 1930s, monumental painting became a mandatory element of the whole culture. It depended on the development of architecture and was closely associated with it.
We walked the streets of the regional center and found a considerable number of monumental art works from the Soviet period. Residents of the city walk past them every day, but do not think about the time of emergence of those fairly familiar images, and sometimes do not notice their existence.
The first example of Soviet art that we visited and photographed is the bas-relief frieze on the Regional House of Culture of Trade Unions (Ruska st.).
Inside the building you can see a tapestry (on the second floor) and the mosaic on the wall on the second and on the first floor that remained from the Soviet period.
We visited the student recreation center "Juventus" (on Mukachivska st.), where there is well preserved stained glass on the second floor.
In the house across the 16-storey building (Svoboda Avenue), where we went later, there are remains of mosaics in good condition, which in Soviet times decorated almost all of the street.
The same mosaic is painted on the building of the Central Children's Library (B.Khmelnitsky sq.).
On the house next to the library, even from afar you can see a graffito not damaged by time.
Near the "Bilochka" shopping mall on Svoboda Avenue, on one of the corner houses on the wall you can see a piece of wall painting. There used to be a portrait of Lenin there. Now, only a faint outline of his face is left there, which they have repeatedly tried to paint over, but to no avail - the significant footprint of the history of the Soviet era has not disappeared.
In the heart of the city there is also something to see. Walk along Nezalezhnist embankment, past the school number 3 (the longest linden alley in Europe), and you will notice another graffito with elements of the mosaic that adorns the outside wall of the institution.
On the old building, opposite the State Tax Inspectorate in Uzhgorod, we found a faint wall painting, where you can see a piece of a painted wall (the painting depicts a white dove flying in the sky), the plaster with the rest of the picture has, unfortunately, peeled off.
On Kapitulna street, where we went later, behind the house, where a Soviet artist Yosyp Bokshay once taught and worked, there is another graffito (landmark - Y.Bokshay's plaque on the house). Not many people know about this work of art.
We went to Voloshin street, where on the building of the Transcarpathian Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogic Education there is a graffito with addition of subtle mosaics elements.
In the Transcarpathian Regional Clinical Hospital on Kapushanska street (the first building from Kapushanska street) on the third floor, you can see another two colored graffitos. With these works we finish our little tour of the city, which still breathes with Soviet times...
The search for monumental art of the Soviet period in Uzhgorod can go on, even outside the city. We definitely need to know the history of our country, and only then, we can compare the past and the present cultural life of Transcarpathia. To feel its values and development, and therefore - the atmosphere of the period.
